Teller County Commissioner Candidates

For District #3 (Running against Jim Ignatius)

Charles Olson
Charles.Olson@tellerdems.org

As a parent raising a young family in Teller County, I feel that I have a great investment in the future of this region. I am happily married to my wife Sara and am a father to two wonderful girls, Autumn and Chloe. I acknowledge that the decisions our leaders make now will affect the lives of our children, which is why I have decided to run for public office.

I have been actively involved in government having worked on referendums, action teams, served as a committeeman and volunteered with various groups. Presently I serve on Woodland Park’s Board of Adjustments and look forward to communicating with residents and businesses to resolve pertinent village issues. I have a sincere desire to understand the needs of Teller County residents and look forward to establishing a dialogue with them.

I am currently employed in North Colorado Springs. Unfortunately, commuting to and from Colorado Springs is a reality for me and for many other Pikes Peak area residents. A combination of lack of affordable housing and high paying jobs has forced many individuals to commute to and from Teller County. If elected, I plan to work with developers, employers, and government agencies to combat our regions lack of affordable housing and high paying jobs.

As a life-long learner I understand the possibilities education can present to individuals. I currently hold a Masters Degree of Science in Management and have had the opportunity to study several topics which will enable me to understand the challenges facing today’s public administrators and the community abroad. If elected, I would be deeply committed to bringing higher education and career training opportunities to Teller County.

As an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys hiking, fishing and camping, I appreciate the trails, streams, reservoirs and the vast amounts of open spaces that this region has to offer. These gifts are ours to preserve for future generations. As commissioner I intend on working with state and local agencies to make certain that our region’s assets will be available for future generations to enjoy.

To effectively operate, government should embrace transparency and communication between itself and its residents. To truly understand the needs of the community these elements must exist in a government body. As commissioner, I plan to embrace an open door policy and to advocate for the Teller County community. I have a deep commitment to help the residents of Teller County maintain a quality of life and live in a community governed by a commissioner who puts their interests first.

Important dates leading up to the 2008 election

The Colorado State Democratic Party has voted to move up the dates for precinct caucuses. Below are the important dates to remember as the 2008 national election rapidly approaches.

December 5, 2007
Voter Registration

To participate in the 2008 caucus process as a Democrat you must register as a Democrat by December 5, 2007.

February 5, 2008
Precinct Caucus

All registered Democrats are invited to the caucus meeting and will express their preference for the presidential nomination. Delegates for the county assembly will also be elected.

March 1, 2008
Teller County Assembly and Convention

Delegates for the Colorado State Assembly and Convension will be elected. This meeting will be held at the Woodland Park Public Library at 218 East Midland Ave starting at 2:00 PM.

May 17, 2008
Colorado State Assembly and Convention - Colorado Springs

Delegates from every county in the state will meet to nominate a candidate for President. They will also elect additional delegates to the Democratic National Convention.

August 25-28, 2008
Democratic National Convention - Denver

Delegates from across the nation will meet to make the final decision of the Democratic nominee for president.

If you want to be elected as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention, you must attend either the Congressional District Convention or the State Convention (or both), as well as your Precinct Caucus and County Convention. You cannot be elected in absentia, nor are proxies allowed at any stage of the process.

What's the difference between an Assembly and a Convention? Conventions happen only in presidential election years and serve to either elect delegates to further Conventions, or to nominate the candidate for president of the United States in the National Convention, as determined by national rules. Assemblies happen every 2 years and serve to nominate candidates for county and state elective offices, as well as to write the Party Platform, as determined by state rules.

Volunteer for the Democratic National Convention

By now you've probably heard that Denver has won the right to host the 2008 Democratic National Convention.  If you'd like to volunteer, the convention committee needs skills in organizing, recruting, and fund-raising.  You can sign-up as a volunteer right from the Colorado State Democratic Party site.
